CoinDesk was born in May 2013 as a global financial media website in the nascent years of cryptocurrency and blockchain, just a few short years after bitcoin’s 2009 arrival in the world.
In September 2015, we hosted the first-ever global crypto/blockchain conference, “Consensus.” Immersive experience event, the world's leading industry crypto/blockchain conference.
CoinDesk became part of the Digital Currency Group in January 2016. One of the largest private investors in the industry and a provider of trading and other investment services for the industry. CoinDesk subsidiary continues to operate independently of its parent company.
Kevin Worth joined as CEO of CoinDesk in February 2017. Previous President & CEO of The Deal, owned by TheStreet, and Corporate Strategic Planning roles at NY Times, The Deal, The Street, and Bloomberg.
In May 2018, Consensus anchored the first Blockchain Week NYC, a CoinDesk-NYC partnership.
Michael J. Casey joined as Chief Content Officer in October 2019. Previous advisor at MIT Media Lab's Digital Currency Initiative, 18-year stint as a journalist at Dow Jones and The Wall Street Journal, and author of The Age of Cryptocurrency, The Unfair Trade & The Truth Machine
In January 2021, CoinDesk acquired TradeBlock, the world’s leading provider of indices and institutional trading tools for digital currencies.
CoinDesk Launched Broadcast Programs in February 2021. Daily and weekly live stream content begins broadcasting from CoinDesk’s brand new state-of-the-art TV studio in its new headquarters Feb 2021
In April 2021, CoinDesk launched the TradeBlock Bitcoin Price index (XBX) re-brand as the CoinDesk Bitcoin Price Index (XBX).
